How do you control your negative emotions? Most of us believe that you have to fight with those emotions in order to control them, and although that can help, it usually ends up in those emotions becoming even stronger and more fortified.
Why is that? It’s because the emotions are so difficult to defeat that we end up losing a lot of those struggles and then something begins to happen. Because of the repeated failures to defeat those emotions, we start to believe those emotions are more powerful than we first thought, and the end result is that they become stronger in our own minds.
The problem is that we’ve heard so much about will power and self-discipline that we believe every issue is handled like two wrestlers going into a ring. We believe that to overcome anything in life is always a struggle of the will.
What ends up happening is that people try to overcome negative emotions by focusing solely on getting rid of them which can often lead to those emotions becoming stronger. Why? Because they’re so hard to defeat which means you’ll experience a lot of failure which makes them appear more powerful in your mind.
