For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a positive thinker, but even until my young adulthood, my circumstances DID NOT match my thinking!
- I was a positive thinker, but I could barely pay my bills.
- I was a positive thinker, but I had dead-end jobs.
- I was a positive thinker, but no one took me seriously.
I struggled, but I kept watching over my thoughts and the words coming out of my mouth. I believed for something more, but I COULD NOT SEE HOW things would ever change.
For a season, I worked as a busboy and had a wife and two small children. No matter how positive I was, HOW were things going to change? How would I ever stop living hand to mouth? Have you ever heard of a busboy earning six figures?
I eventually got bumped up to being a waiter, and although that brought in a little more money, I was still barely making it.
For me, THAT was frustration. To be doing all that I could to think positive to endure my circumstances but see no clear path to anything better. I never gave up, but I was frustrated as hell!
I Don’t Meet Many Possibility Thinkers
Maybe you’re in a similar situation. Maybe you’re trying your best to be optimistic to keep yourself going, but you just don’t understand why nothing is developing for you. I know how it is. I’ve been there and then some.
BUT…I eventually broke free of it, and I’d like to help you do that as well with a just a few tips to take your mindset from just positive thinking to something more powerful: POSSIBILITY thinking!
I know a lot of positive thinkers, but I don’t meet many possibility thinkers. Many people don’t understand the difference, and for most of them, they’re striving to be positive thinkers, but they still struggle with reaching their goals, and they don’t understand why.
One of the main reasons why people who strive to be more positive still struggle—and don’t reach their goals—is because they aren’t possibility thinkers. I’ll briefly explain.
Possibility means “unspecified qualities of a promising nature.” In other words, it’s the potential of something.
And when it comes to you and your life, there are TWO areas in possibility thinking:
- What’s possible with you.
- What’s possible in the world.
Possibility thinking is where people often miss it. They’re just trying to be positive. They’re just trying to survive another day. They’re just trying to keep their head above water. All of that is good and foundational, but it won’t create the changes they want.
Possibility Thinking is Potential Thinking
Things will change when you start meditating upon your resident potential as well as the resident potential of this world, and THIS is where people struggle.
- They don’t believe that they are capable of more.
- They don’t believe the world has much to offer.
For example, I know positive thinkers who are critical about the potential in the world. They believe there’s scarcity, not abundance. They doubt people will help them when they will. They think the world is going to hell in a handbasket when the truth is that things have never been better when it comes to resources, technology, and more.
You see, you have to believe you’re capable of ten times more, and that abundance exists in the universe. Possibility thinking is “potential thinking.”
When Things Will Change
Can you see how this is different than just trying to be happy today? Can you see the difference between meditating upon what’s possible for you in this world and just trying to survive another bad day?
Your mind is so powerful that you can use it to create things you’ve never dreamed of before, but because you spend so much time dwelling on your circumstances, that mental power remains untapped.
Things will change when you switch from positive thinking to possibility thinking because that’s when you’ll start to release creative ideas for solutions, opportunities, or paths that you’ve not considered before.
In my case, when I switched to possibility thinking, it wasn’t too long after that that my mother contacted me and said, “Honey, I don’t like to see you struggling like this. You need to make more money. I was looking at a brochure from an art school, and you were such a good artist in grade school and high school that I thought you could get a career in commercial art.”
At the time, I wanted to be a speaker, so I didn’t want another “job” even if it paid more. Yes, I loved art when I was younger—and I often took first place in school art contests—but I felt strongly about being an inspirational speaker.

4 Steps to Possibility

- Meditate on the fact that you’re capable of ten times more.
- Meditate on the fact that the universe is full of abundance.
- Meditate on creative options to get out of where you are.
- Start taking action on at least one of those options.
That last step is vital because that’s when things begin to open up for you. I may have gone to school for commercial art, but today, clients pay me for my mind, and things like design, marketing, and social media support are just ways to implement the ideas I provide them.
